FAQ for Auto-Registering your Microchips with HomeAgain

  • When does a microchip get registered?
    • When an outcome of Adoption is created for a pet (same day).
  • When the integration gets turned on, is it that date and moving forward for adopted pets?
    • Yes.
  • But when I intake a new pet and enter its microchip number, wouldn't that pet get registered to my rescue?
    • No. It will only register chips after an adoption outcome event has been entered.
  • How long does it take after the adoption for the chip to be registered?
    • The microchip will be registered within 24 hours! If for any reason, there is an issue with registration (likely due to missing data on the pet or person), you will receive an email notification regarding the error.
  • What happens if I get an error notification?
    • The email will explain why the microchip registration failed so you can correct the information in your Pawlytics. After you correct that information, you DO NOT need to do anything else. The microchip will register automatically the next time Home Again pulls the information from your database. You can confirm the microchip's new enrollment by checking the enrollment date on the AAHA lookup tool here: Microchip Registry Lookup
    • You can also email Kathleen Daly with Merck for additional help with enrollment errors: kathleen.daly@merck.com
  • Will our organization always be the backup on the microchip?
    • Chips are always traceable back to the organization that purchased them.
  • If the pet is returned and then re-adopted? Would the system also be triggered by that event?
    • Yes! There is a feedback loop that would auto-update on intake, and then again on the next adoption.
  • Does it cost money to update the microchip information?
    • There is no charge to update the chips. You can make unlimited changes online or over the phone however premium services, if your adopters choose to upgrade, include
      • 24/7 pet specialist
      • 24/7 medical hotline - with licensed veterinarians on call
      • Rapid lost alerts that go out to shelters, clinics, rescues, and individuals
      • Provide travel assistance - if they are found 500 miles away they get reimbursement up to $500 and assistance with arrangements
  • Can other brands of microchips be registered with HomeAgain?
    • That's the beauty of this integration! All brands of microchips will get registered with HomeAgain upon adoption once this feature is turned on!
  • Do the adopters get an alert when the microchip is registered successfully in their name?
    • Adopters will receive a welcome email from HomeAgain. They can update and add to their pet profile at this time.
  • What animal information will be included in the upload?
    • Pet Name
    • Species
    • Sex
    • Primary color
    • Date of Birth
    • Microchip Number
  • What person (adopter) information will be included in the uploads?
    • The microchip is registered using information in the pet adopter's record.
      • First and Last Name
      • Address
      • Email address
      • Phone number
  • Will microchips that have already been registered duplicate?
    • If the microchip is already registered and the email address in HomeAgain matches what you provided, then no further action is necessary.
  • If I enter an adoption date that is in the future, will the microchip wait to register on that date?
    • No. The chip will auto-register on the day you save the adoption event in Pawlytics. For example, if the adoption is happening on February 8, but you enter the adoption outcome on February 3, the chip will register on February 3.
